Introductory Information
The Laboratory of Genetics began its operation in 1989, initially integrated with the Laboratory of Medical Biology, following the election of the then-Lecturer, Mr. Theodoros Lialiaris. Until 2002, the Laboratory of Medical Biology and Genetics operated as a single unit for both teaching and research, providing courses and laboratory training in Medical Biology and Genetics to undergraduate medical students. Since 2002, it has operated as an independent laboratory providing educational, clinical-laboratory, and research work. The Laboratory of Genetics is part of the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis, providing genetic services to patients and examinees.

- Identification of genetic variants and study of pathogenetic mechanisms of genes responsible for rare human diseases.
- Application of the Sister Chromatid Exchange (SCE) method as a predictive test for chromosomal fragility in patients with or without cancer.
- Screening for mutagenic or carcinogenic substances in the environment.
The results of the above studies are included in presentations and publications in various conferences and scientific journals, in collaboration with other Laboratories and Clinics of DUTH and other institutions.
