Director: Alexandra Giatromanolaki, Professor, Faculty of Medicine, DUTH
Established by Presidential Decree (PD) 459/87 (Government Gazette/FEK 215/8-12-1987)
Ministerial Installation Decision: Υ4α /29261/03 (Government Gazette/FEK 750/11-6-2003)
Introduction
The Laboratory of Pathology of DUTH is located in the Preclinical Course Buildings of the Faculty of Medicine – ground floor of Building 5 at the University Campus, where student laboratory exercises and seminars take place. Additionally, the Laboratory of Immunohistochemistry – Immunobiology operates within the same premises, where part of the diagnostic and research work of the faculty members is conducted. The building includes student exercise rooms with corresponding educational equipment, a locker room for students’ temporary clothing storage, an archive room, research laboratories, and offices for faculty members. However, a section of the DUTH Laboratory of Pathology is also established at the University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli (near the University Campus), where the majority of the purely clinical/diagnostic work of the faculty members is performed (Diagnostic Laboratories, 2nd floor, Building A2). This arrangement was deemed necessary to better support the Hospital’s Clinics, such as in the case of frozen sections (intraoperative biopsies), and to ensure closer cooperation with clinical colleagues. The hospital-based Pathology Laboratory, although small in size, features all necessary facilities: a surgical specimen preparation room, a microtome room, a processing and staining room, microscopic examination rooms for specialists and residents, a secretariat, and an archive room. Furthermore, the Laboratory is enriched with the latest editions of major pathology textbooks and subscribes to various international journals of the specialty.

Research
- Tumor angiogenic activity – as a phenomenon of primary importance for the development, local infiltration, and metastasis of malignant processes.
- Intratumoral hypoxia and its role in triggering molecular pathways associated with anaerobic metabolism, angiogenesis, and the metastatic potential of various neoplasms, such as colorectal, lung, and breast cancer. Specifically, this research focuses on uncovering the pathways through which hypoxia renders cancer cells resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
- Tumor metabolism and immune response.
Services
- Microscopic examination and diagnosis of all surgical and endoscopic specimens, as well as fine-needle and forceps biopsies, of the University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli. The material originates from both the University Clinics and the corresponding National Health System (ESY) Clinics.
- Immunohistochemical investigation of malignant neoplasms to clarify their histogenetic origin for more effective treatment.
- Immunohistochemical investigation of prognostic factors of malignancy and markers of response to treatment.
