Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department

Established by Presidential Decree 459/87 (Government Gazette 215/8-12-1987) and installed at the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis in accordance with Joint Ministerial Decision Υ4α 29261/2003 (Government Gazette 750/11-6-2003).
Faculty Members : Aspasia Serdari, Professor of Child Psychiatry, Director of the University Child Psychiatry Clinic.
The educational work primarily includes the training of:
  • Students of the Department of Medicine (undergraduate and postgraduate) through the elective mandatory course “Child Psychiatry” (see Department of Medicine Study Guide), participation in Psychiatry courses (9th, 11th, and 12th semesters), and participation in the MSc “Social Psychiatry” as well as other postgraduate programs of the DUTH Department of Medicine and other Departments.
  • Students of the Department of Early Childhood Education (TEΕPH) of DUTH through the elective mandatory course “Child Psychopathology.”
  • Students of the Department of Primary Education of DUTH through the elective mandatory course “Primary Education and Mental Health.”
The clinical work of the Clinic is based on the principles of Community Child Psychiatry.
Currently, it supports:
  • General Outpatient Clinic services.
  • Medical-Pedagogical Center services, focused on Community Child Psychiatry, such as comprehensive diagnosis and assessment across the spectrum of mental health issues/disorders, early detection programs for developmental disorders, psychological and psychosocial difficulties, therapeutic intervention with special education sessions, and psychotherapeutic follow-up (individual, family, and counseling).
  • Specialized Outpatient Clinics focusing on specific subject areas.
  • Mobile Mental Health Unit for children and adolescents, for early detection and intervention in areas with difficult access to Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services, in collaboration with the University Psychiatric Clinic of DUTH.
  • Preventive and Counseling Child Psychiatry Unit, for the early detection and management of disorders, as well as parent support groups aimed at providing psychoeducation and support.
  • Child and Adolescent Forensic Psychiatry Unit, in collaboration with all involved authorities for conducting forensic expert evaluations.
  • Liaison-Consultation Psychiatry and emergency department (ER) on-call coverage.
The research work includes conducting and publishing clinical studies, either independently or in collaboration with other academic research institutions, locally or abroad.
In addition, the Clinic organizes and supports community actions aimed at training and raising awareness on issues regarding child and adolescent mental health and the elimination of stigma surrounding mental disorders. It also maintains Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and collaborates with relevant organizations in Greece and internationally.
