Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (SSHMS)

The Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (SSHMS) was founded in September 1993 and is a non-profit, non-governmental civil society, conducting multiple activities in the context of volunteering. It consists of 7 departments, 1 in each Medical Department of a Hellenic University (Athens, Alexandroupolis, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Crete, Larissa, Patras) and is staffed with more than 4,000 registered members. Its purpose is the arousal of medical students and their engagement in projects of scientific, social, and educational content. As an ultimate goal, there is the conduction of scientific and social work based on the selfless contribution of students and the focus on the development of volunteering.

During each academic year, there are numerous educational workshops being organized by each department (stitching of wounds and basic clinical skills, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation workshops, etc.), as well as projects aiming at raising awareness and mobilizing society (voluntary blood donations, collection of emergencies) and seminars concerning medical as well as sensitive medical subjects (bone marrow donation, sexual health, etc.).

The Scientific Congress of Hellenic Medical Students (SCHMS) is the major event of SSHMS and is organized annually by a different department. Within the framework of the Conference, students are given the opportunity to develop a scientific and research project, to familiarize themselves with the preparation and presentation of scientific projects, to come into contact with distinguished professors, as well as meet their fellow students from all over Greece and abroad. After 18 years, the Alexandroupolis department of SSHMS organized the 29th Scientific Conference of Hellenic Medical Students & the 17th International Forum of Medical Students and Young Doctors on May 5-7, 2023, with great success, including 140 roundtables, 59 practical medical skill seminars (workshops), oral and paper presentations on a wide range of topics and the Medical Olympics.

Furthermore, the SSHMS program “Apovasis” has been remarkably successful. It is organized by SSHMS in collaboration with Healthcare Units and Local Government Organizations of islands and mainland tourist destinations in Greece since the summer of 1997. The aim of the program is to offer volunteer assistance to doctors and staff of Healthcare Units (General Hospitals, Health Centers, Regional Rural Hospitals) for the time period between the end of July and the beginning of September each year, when there are increased needs due to the touristic activity peak and the climate conditions.

HelMSIC consists of 7 Local Committees, one in each city where there is a Medical School. The students of each Medical School are members of HelMSIC by the time they register and have the opportunity to actively participate in their local committee.
Each Local Committee carries out HelMSIC projects and activities, addressed to the students of each medical school. The active members take on the organizing of these projects in a local level and they can be involved in fields of actions and supporting structures of HelMSIC, by taking local responsibilities.
The active members of the local committee meet regularly once a week. The meetings agendas include current issues such as projects management and reporting, troubleshooting, upcoming projects, preparation for participation in the national meetings and capacity building processes. All members can participate in these meetings and express their point of view freely. Any medical student interested in learning more about HelMSIC can attend local meetings. Active engagement through the local committee enables each student to cultivate their organizational and communicative skills, working with a group of people, who share common interests and concerns.
